I cannot find your name.

When Was Your Name Written in the Lamb’s Book of Life?

The concept of the Lamb’s Book of Life appears in the Bible, specifically in the book of Revelation. According to Revelation 13:8 and 17:8, the names of those who belong to God were written in this book before the foundation of the world.

In other words, God’s knowledge of those who would be saved predates creation itself. So, if you’re a Christian, your name was inscribed in the Lamb’s Book of Life long before you were baptized or professed faith in Jesus Christ12. This understanding emphasizes God’s sovereignty and eternal plan for salvation.

Revelation 13:8 says, “All who dwell on earth will worship (the beast), everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.” So, here it says our names were written in the book of life before the beginning of time (“the foundation of the world”).

Was your name written in the Lamb’s Book of Life the moment you received Christ as your Savior? . I thought as soon as someone walked the aisle and repeated the sinner’s prayer, his or her name was immediately written in the book, never to be erased.

I have heard many different stories of the salvation experience from many different people. I have a salvation experience that is unique to me just as everyone else does as well.

I wasn’t in a church and I didn’t say the sinner’s prayer, but Christ lives within me nonetheless. Our experiences are different because Christ loves us each so uniquely, He meets us right where we are and does what He has to do to win our love. He goes to a lot of trouble for those He loves and I am thankful for that.

Here, in the Bible Belt, there seems to be a “common salvation experience” for many believers. I’m not sure if it is denominational or if it is a regional phenomenon, but very often I hear a story that goes something like this;

“I decided to walk the aisle (at church) at the age of {insert age here} and I repeated the sinner’s prayer that the pastor recited for me, and then my name was written in the book of life, and I was saved from hell forever.”

Now, that’s just fine and I’m sure God saves people in that way, but as I read my Bible, I think that the whole Book of Life thing may be misunderstood by many believers. Until I began seeing a few verses about it in Scripture, I was under the same sort of belief…that my name wasn’t written in the book until I made the decision for Christ. I don’t believe that anymore.

The first scripture that made me curious about the subject was Revelation 17:8.

“The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to rise from the bottomless pit and go to destruction. And the dwellers on earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will marvel to see the beast, because it was and is not and is to come.”

This tells me that there are names that are written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world and there are names that are not. Just one verse isn’t enough for me to draw conclusions, so I began to take note of the verses that spoke of the Book and what they said.

Revelation 3:5:

“The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.”

Wow. Those are Jesus’ words. He says that He won’t blot out the name. That implies that there might be names that could be blotted out, otherwise why would He bother saying anything about it?

Revelation 13:8:

“And all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.”

Psalm 139:16:

“Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”

This verse is the most enlightening of them all on the topic. Here, God has David’s days written in His book, before David was even formed. The more verses like this I read, the more I am thinking that all the names of the righteous in Christ were written in the Book from the foundation of the world and the ones who do not overcome or fall away are erased or blotted out.

Psalm 69:28:

Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous.

“Blot me: Allusion may be made to the registry of births, in which those born of a particular tribe were entered in the list of their respective families under that tribe.

This was the book of life; and when any died, his name might be considered as blotted out of this list. But as Moses addressed the Lord, he undoubtedly referred, by faith, to the book of God’s remembrance.”

Maybe this doesn’t really make that much difference to salvation. Maybe this borders on a predestination/election discussion. Either way, we know that God knows all and apparently the names of the righteous have already been written in the Book of the Lamb from the foundation of the world. The last warning the Bible leaves with us is two verses away from the end in Revelation 22:19:

“And if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.”

A dire warning indeed. I definitely don’t want my share to be taken from me or my name to be blotted out! I would love to hear other verses that I have missed about this subject, if you have any to share, please leave a comment!

What is the significance of being in the Lamb's Book of Life?

The significance of being in the Lamb’s Book of Life lies in its association with eternal salvation and divine approval. Let me elaborate:

Divine Approval and Election:

The Lamb’s Book of Life represents God’s sovereign choice and election. According to Revelation 13:8, the names of those who belong to God were written in this book before the foundation of the world. This implies that God, in His omniscience, knew who would respond to His grace and accept salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

Being in the Lamb’s Book of Life signifies that God has chosen you for redemption and eternal life. It reflects His favor and approval.

Assurance of Salvation:

For believers, knowing that their names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life provides assurance of salvation. It assures them that their faith in Christ is not in vain.

Jesus Himself affirmed this concept when He said, “Rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20). It’s a cause for celebration and confidence.

Security and Perseverance:

The Lamb’s Book of Life underscores the security of the believer. Once a name is written there, it cannot be erased or removed.
Jesus promised, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:28). Being in the book ensures eternal security.

Final Judgment and Inheritance:

During the final judgment, the Lamb’s Book of Life will be opened (Revelation 20:12). Those whose names are found in it will inherit eternal life in the new heaven and new earth.

Conversely, those whose names are not found in the book will face eternal separation from God (Revelation 20:15).

Being in the Lamb’s Book of Life signifies God’s predestined choice, assurance of salvation, security, and the promise of eternal inheritance. It’s a profound and comforting truth for believers.
