Put your burdens on the lord.

Look at what David tells us to do with our burdens in Psa 55:22 — Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. Whenever we are burdened, God promises to sustain us and not let us be moved (which means to be shaken or totter). But there is something we must do to receive this promise.

To cast your burdens upon the Lord means to transfer ownership of those burdens from yourself to the Lord. You essentially give your burdens to Him to carry, rather than carrying them yourself. It is a decision you make in your mind to release the care and the worry about the problem. Psalm 55:22 says "Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved".

Have you ever had anyone tell you “you just need to cast your burdens upon the Lord”?

Or maybe you’ve heard a preacher say that you need to “cast your cares onto the Lord”

But what does this mean? What does it mean to cast your burdens on the Lord, and how do you do it?

No one seems to explain how to actually cast your burdens upon the Lord. How do we do this? And how do we know when we have successfully cast our cares on the Lord?

Trusting God With Our Burdens (Freedom from the things that wear you out)

A burden can be a thing that weighs heavily on your mind. It could be concern for a loved one, a financial need, concern about the outcome of a situation. We all have some burdens or cares. Some are light and some are heavy and life draining. Some burdens can rob your sleep at night, which is an attack of fear. We have to find a way to cope.

What Are Burdens?

We know what burdens feel like. They make our hearts feel heavy — like something is weighing them down.

So what causes this? I think it’s usually because we see something painful in our future. And that fear of future pain is a weight — a burden — on our hearts.

Think about your own heart. Are you feeling burdened? If so, identify what pain you are fearing.

Maybe it’s the pain of a broken marriage. Or a lost job. Or wayward children. Or poor health.

The reason you are burdened is because you are fearing that pain.

But what can we do when we feel burdened?

Jesus said at least 8 times that worry is a sin of not trusting God. Some version of “do not fear” is the most frequent command in the Bible. But knowing this does not keep us from doing it. Our worry and fear is actually a manifestation of unbelief.

Why does God consider worry a sin?

If as believers, we live in worry and fear we are saying God says that He is faithful, but I am not absolutely convinced yet.

Noah Webster’s dictionary indicates that trust is a resting of the mind on the good character of someone else. Trust brings rest.

Trust, Assurance.

Psalm 55:22; 1 Peter 5:7 .

If the world from you withhold of its silver and its gold,
And you have to get along with meager fare,
Just remember, in His Word, how He feeds the little bird—
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

Refrain:

Leave it there, leave it there,
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there;
If you trust and never doubt, He will surely bring you out—
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

If your body suffers pain and your health you can’t regain,
And your soul is almost sinking in despair,
Jesus knows the pain you feel, He can save and He can heal—
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

When your enemies assail and your heart begins to fail,
Don’t forget that God in Heaven answers prayer;
He will make a way for you and will lead you safely through—
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

When your youthful days are gone and old age is stealing on,
And your body bends beneath the weight of care;
He will never leave you then, He’ll go with you to the end—
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

How can I cast my burden?

Casting your burdens upon the Lord is a concept rooted in faith and trust. It’s about releasing your worries, anxieties, and heavy thoughts to God, knowing that He cares for you. Here are practical steps to do so:

Prayer: Verbally express your burden to God. Say something like, “Father, I cast this care or burden upon You, in Jesus’ name. Amen.” By doing this, you intentionally transfer ownership of the burden from yourself to the Lord.

Believe: Trust that God cares about you. Understand that He is aware of your situation and will either handle it directly or guide you on what to do. Your faith in His love and wisdom is essential.

Mind Control: Actively refuse to allow the weight of the burden back into your mind. When worries resurface, remind yourself aloud, “I have given this care to the Lord. I will not carry it.”
The phrase “cast your burdens upon the Lord” originates from Psalm 55:22 and a similar verse in 1 Peter 5:7.

In these verses, we’re encouraged to humble ourselves by casting our cares on God. To “cast” means to shed, fling, or throw—just as a snake sheds its skin. When you cast your burdens upon the Lord, you mentally release them to Him, transferring ownership. It’s a decision to let go of worry and trust that God will sustain you.

Remember, your burdens can be life’s troubles, worries, or situations you didn’t directly choose. By casting them onto the Lord, you allow Him to carry what you cannot.

Here are 3 simple steps to cast your cares and burdens on the Lord:

1. Give your problem to God in prayer. Say out loud “Father, I cast this care or burden upon you, in Jesus Name Amen.”

2. Believe that God cares about you and will handle the situation or show you what to do.

3. Refuse to allow the weight of the care or burden to come back into your mind.

We must recognize the difference between burdens that are right for us to bear and burdens that are wrong. We should never bear the burdens of sin or doubt, but there are some burdens placed on us by God which He does not intend to lift off. God wants us to roll them back on Him— to literally “cast your burden,” which He has given you, “on the Lord….” If we set out to serve God and do His work but get out of touch with Him, the sense of responsibility we feel will be overwhelming and defeating.

But if we will only roll back on God the burdens He has placed on us, He will take away that immense feeling of responsibility, replacing it with an awareness and understanding of Himself and His presence.

Many servants set out to serve God with great courage and with the right motives. But with no intimate fellowship with Jesus Christ, they are soon defeated. They do not know what to do with their burden, and it produces weariness in their lives. Others will see this and say, “What a sad end to something that had such a great beginning!”

“Cast your burden on the Lord….” You have been bearing it all, but you need to deliberately place one end on God’s shoulder. “…the government will be upon His shoulder” (Isaiah 9:6). Commit to God whatever burden He has placed on you. Don’t just cast it aside, but put it over onto Him and place yourself there with it. You will see that your burden is then lightened by the sense of companionship. But you should never try to separate yourself from your burden.
