What If There Was No Resurrection?
The Christian faith revolves around the resurrection of Jesus. It is the pin that holds every doctrine, every practice, and every belief together. If we deny the resurrection, we deny the very basis of the Christian faith.
Sadly, there are many people today who deny this fundamental truth. Some deny that Jesus was bodily raised on the third day, others deny that we will be raised to a new life after death.
Denying the resurrection is catastrophic for our faith. The good news is that Christ has indeed been raised. The resurrection of the dead is not something that we merely say we believe; it is an event that occurred in history. It is something we can affirm in confidence.
This is nothing new. Even in the first century, there was the tendency to deny the resurrection. In his first letter to the Corinthians, for example, Paul addresses this very topic. He has heard that a group of people within the Corinthian community deny the resurrection of the dead.
If there were no resurrection, our Christian faith would be profoundly impacted. Let’s explore the implications:
Faith Has No Power:
The resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of our faith. Denying it nullifies the very core of what we believe. The gospel truth is that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose on the third day .
If there is no resurrection, our faith becomes untenable. Our spiritual practices lose meaning. Why pray to Jesus if he’s merely a memory? Our faith becomes “useless” .
Furthermore, without the resurrection, there’s no way to experience God’s forgiveness. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, linked to the resurrection, is the basis for our salvation
.
No Hope After Death:
If there were no resurrection, we’d have no hope beyond this life. Instead of being raised to eternal life in heaven, we’d face eternal punishment and separation from God .
False Witnesses:
Paul warns that denying the resurrection makes us false witnesses about God. We’ve testified that God raised Christ from the dead, but if there’s no resurrection, our testimony crumbles .
The resurrection is not just a theological concept; it’s an event that occurred in history. It’s the pin that holds our Christian faith together. Thankfully, Christ has indeed been raised, and our hope remains secure .
In 1 Corinthians 15:12–19 Paul makes seven conclusions based on the Corinthians misguided belief that resurrection from the dead was not possible. In seven statements we learn the horrible prospect of a world without resurrection. Conversely, if the resurrection is true and Jesus Christ has been raised to life as the firstfruits of a great harvest, there are equally significant promises of hope.
Consider both sides and give thanks to God for Christ’s victory over the grave.
If there is no resurrection from the dead, then . . .
Christ is not risen from the dead (vv. 13, 16).
Preaching the gospel is empty (v. 14a).
Faith in the gospel is empty (v. 14b, 17).
The apostles are imposters, falsely representing God (v. 15).
There is no remission of sins and guilt remains (v. 17).
Death is a certainty and all who have died will perish (v. 18).
We deluded fools have no hope beyond this short life (v. 19).
Some people doubt the resurrection of Jesus Christ for various reasons. Let’s explore a few of these:
**Unbelief and Willful Choice:
For some, it’s not merely doubt but willful unbelief. They consciously decide not to believe, even when presented with evidence.
Unbelief becomes a sin when it’s a matter of the heart—a deliberate rejection of truth .
**Fear of Lifestyle Change:
Accepting the resurrection requires a radical shift in lifestyle. Some minds are closed because belief would demand transformation.
People who cling to worldly pleasures and habits may resist the resurrection’s implications .
**Intellectual Questions:
Skeptics raise questions like: “How can someone rise from death after being in a grave for three days?”
They wonder if early Christians experienced a mass delusion that has been perpetuated over time .
**Perceived Lack of Impact:
Even if Jesus rose from death, some ask, “What difference has it made in the world?”
They seek tangible evidence of the resurrection’s impact .
Doubt arises from a complex interplay of intellectual queries, personal choices, and the desire for empirical proof. Yet, the resurrection remains a cornerstone of faith, inviting us to explore, question, and ultimately choose our response.
How does the resurrection impact Christian life?
The resurrection reverberates through every facet of Christian life, infusing it with hope, purpose, and transformation. Let’s explore its profound impact:
Hope and Assurance:
The resurrection assures believers of life beyond the grave. Death loses its sting, and the grave becomes a mere transition.
Our hope extends beyond this earthly existence. We anticipate reunion with loved ones and eternal communion with God.
Victory Over Sin and Death:
Christ’s resurrection signifies victory over sin and death. His sacrifice on the cross paid the debt we owed.
We are no longer slaves to sin; we have the power to live transformed lives.
New Identity:
In Christ’s resurrection, we find our new identity. We are no longer defined by our past mistakes or brokenness.
We are redeemed, beloved, and co-heirs with Christ.
Empowered Living:
The same power that raised Jesus from the dead resides in us. We can overcome challenges, temptations, and adversity.
The resurrection empowers us to love sacrificially, forgive, and serve others.
Eternal Perspective:
Our focus shifts from temporal concerns to eternal significance. We invest in heavenly treasures rather than fleeting ones.
We live with an eternal perspective, knowing that our actions ripple into eternity.
Community and Fellowship:
The resurrection binds believers together. We are part of the body of Christ.
We share in His sufferings and His glory, supporting one another on this journey.
Mission and Purpose:
The risen Christ commissioned us to make disciples. Our purpose is to share the gospel and extend His kingdom.
The resurrection fuels our passion for evangelism and compassionate outreach.
The resurrection isn’t a historical event confined to the past; it’s a living reality shaping our present and future. It beckons us to embrace abundant life, walk in faith, and live as resurrection people.
Praise God, Jesus Christ is risen! That, literally, means everything in life to those who trust in him.
