Who are the 144,000 according to the bible?
The number is literal and records Jews from each tribe who become believers in Jesus Christ.
The identity of the 144,000 in the Bible is a topic of debate among scholars and theologians. Here are some interpretations:
The 144,000 symbolically represent all Christians throughout history, both Jews and Gentiles.
The 144,000 are “sealed Jews,” protected from the wrath of the Antichrist during the tribulation period. This group of people will evangelize the world during this period, leading the salvation of millions.
The 144000 are unconverted physical descendants of Israel who repent and become Christians near the middle of the Great Tribulation period.
Meaning of Numbers: The Number 144,000.
What is the meaning of number 144000 (144 x 1000) in the Bible? Who are these mysterious people found in the book of Revelation? Do they constitute the entirety of God's church throughout the years? Could they be living today?
Could the 144000 be a set of people designated by some Christian group or denomination as being special? What does God's word say about this fascinating prophetic subject?
These people are specifically referenced only twice in Scripture. In the end time, after God commands a temporary ceasing of earth's calamities (Revelation 6, 7:1 - 3), he sends a powerful angel on a special mission. The angel is not to allow the sea or even earth's trees to be damage until a unique group of folks are set apart.
Well, one thing that's helpful to remember in Revelation, is that numbers mean things, sometimes in a different way than they do in historical narratives because Revelation is an “apocalyptic work” that shows this thing by pictures. It seems to represent all of God's people, from the Old Testament and the New Testament.
The 12 Tribes of Israel… times the 12 apostles and those that they represent… times a very great number: 1,000. And so 12 x 12 x 1,000 is 144,000. And these are marked with the Seal of God on their foreheads. This shows us that they bow to the Lamb and to His Father, and we can contrast this with the Mark of the Beast that appears on those who do not belong to the Lamb.
And so instead of being sealed, they merely have the Mark of the Beast, which indicates being owned not by the Lamb, but by the Beast. And that they follow his ways. And so there's a contrast between the 144,000 in Revelation 14 and those who are sealed with the Name of the Lamb and His Father and those that do not have that” seal” on them.
The 144,000 are first mentioned in Revelation 7:4, “Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel.” This passage comes in an interlude between the judgment of the sixth seal of the tribulation (Revelation 6:12–17) and the opening of the seventh seal (Revelation 8:1).
How one answers the question “who are the 144,000?” depends on which interpretive approach one takes to the book of Revelation. The futurist approach, which we consider the best, interprets the 144,000 literally. When taken at face value, Revelation 7:4 seems to speak of 144,000 actual people living during the end-times tribulation. Nothing in the passage leads to interpreting the 144,000 as anything but a literal number of Jews—12,000 taken from every tribe of the children of Israel, according to verses 5–8.
These 144,000 Jews are “sealed,” which means they have the special protection of God. They are kept safe from the divine judgments and from the wrath of the Antichrist. They can freely perform their mission during the tribulation. It had been previously prophesied that Israel would repent and turn back to God (Zechariah 12:10; Romans 11:25–27), and the 144,000 Jews seem to be a sort of “first fruits” (Revelation 14:4) of that redeemed Israel.
Their mission seems to be to evangelize the post-rapture world and proclaim the gospel during the tribulation period. As a result of their ministry, millions—“a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language” (Revelation 7:9)—will come to faith in Christ.
Much of the confusion regarding the 144,000 is a result of the false doctrine of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. The Jehovah’s Witnesses claim that 144,000 is a limit to the number of people who will reign with Christ in heaven and spend eternity with God. The 144,000 have what the Jehovah’s Witnesses call the “heavenly hope.” Those who are not among the 144,000 will enjoy what they call the “earthly hope”—a paradise on earth ruled by Christ and the 144,000. It is true that there will be people ruling in the millennium with Christ.
These people will be comprised of the church (believers in Jesus Christ, 1 Corinthians 6:2), Old Testament saints (believers who died before Christ’s first advent, Daniel 7:27), and tribulation saints (those who accept Christ during the tribulation, Revelation 20:4). Yet the Bible places no numerical limit on this group of people. Furthermore, the millennium is different from the eternal state, which will be established at the completion of the millennial period. At that time, God will dwell with us in the New Jerusalem. He will be our God, and we will be His people (Revelation 21:3).
The inheritance promised to us in Christ and sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13–14) will become ours, and we will be co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17).
Physical Descendants.
This special group, found in Revelation 7 and 14, are composed entirely of physical descendants of Israel. Scripture takes great pains to enumerate twelve of Israel's tribes from which 12,000 people each will be converted (or sealed, see Revelation 7:5 - 08).
Two Israelite tribes are not specifically listed as being part of the 144000. The first missing tribe is Dan. The second missing tribe is Ephraim.
The Bible does not state why Ephraim, one of Joseph's two sons, is not directly named as contributing toward the 144000 as his other son Manasseh is listed (Revelation 7:6). It is possible that the people of Ephraim are "hidden" within the distinct naming of the tribe of Joseph (verse 08).
When Are the 144000 Sealed?
When are the 144000 sealed (a spiritual mark to denote their conversion, a possible allusion to Ezekiel 9:4) by a mighty angel? How does their sealing fit into prophetic end time events?
After a great martyrdom of saints instigated by the Satan-inspired one world government, God will cause signs to appear in the heavens (Revelation 6:12 - 14). It is after these signs, and just before the prophetic "Day of the Lord," that 144000 descendants of Israel and "a great multitude" from around the world become converted.
The 144000 are unconverted physical descendants of Israel who repent and become Christians near the middle of the Great Tribulation period. At the start of this time of global trial and trouble (Matthew 24) they are not Christians! If they were, they would have either been taken to a "place of safety" (1Thessalonians 4:16 - 17, Revelation 12:6) or would have been martyred by Satan the devil for their faith.
Biblical Meaning of Number 144,000
All the above means that any Christians living today will not be considered by God to be one of those in this select group! The 144000 (144 x 1000) are part of, but not all, of God's church converted during the tribulation period. They will ultimately be changed into spirit beings at Jesus' Second Coming (Revelation 5:10).
144000 is equal to 8 x 8 (8 squared) x 15 x 15 (15 squared) x 10.
