A Prayer for Your Child’s Protection -What God says about protecting your family?
A parental blessing is a simple but profound reminder to the child that he is loved, and that his true identity comes from God. It is like a shield. The act of blessing one's child also reminds the parents of their awesome responsibility and allows them to pause for a moment and ask for God's grace.
“God is our refuge” — God is the One we can go to when we feel like life is coming at us from all directions. He is the one who will shelter us and “cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings” (Psalm 91:4). We can trust in him and find refuge from the storms of this life. God is also our strength.
What God says about protecting your family? God is all-powerful and can defend our household. Besides physical security, there is nothing else we can do. We cannot protect each and every one of our families at every time of the day. The truth is, we are limited in our capabilities to protect even ourselves, let alone others in our family.
What is the psalm of protection?
Psalm 91 is often recited as a prayer for protection. Some say it before embarking on a journey.
Father, I thank You that You invite us into Your protection; that when we seek You and make You our God that You promise to command Your angels to watch over us (Psalm 91:9-12).
I pray now that You would protect my children as they go throughout their days. Hem them in behind and before and lay Your hand upon them (Psalm 139:5). Do not let any harm come to them. Keep each of my children safe beneath Your wings and guard them against any plots that are meant to harm or bring ruin to them. Be close to each of my children, Lord, surround them with Your favor as with a shield (Psalm 5:11-12).
I pray You would protect them in all the ways they walk; in their coming out and their going in. Guard them against diseases of the mind and body, accidents, predators and kinds of evil and evil-doers. Anoint each of my children with Your favor and protection, letting them rest safely between Your shoulders (Deuteronomy 33:12).
Father, as my children walk through their days, I pray You would give them clear direction in doing Your will, so they may remain within Your protection. Give them wisdom to know when to shy away from potential harm, both physically and spiritually. Then help them courageously walk away from it. May the blood of Jesus ash over each of my children, covering them as they walk through this day and every day of their lives. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Verses to Reflect Upon.
If you make the Most High your dwelling – even the Lord, who is my refuge – then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways: they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. Psalm 91:9-12
You hem me in – behind and before, You have laid Your hand upon me. Psalm 139:5.
The Lord will keep you from all harm – He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. Psalm 121:7-8.
The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10.
But let all who take refuge in You be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread Your protection over them, that those who love Your name may rejoice in You. For surely, O Lord, You bless the righteous; You surround them with Your favor as with a shield. Psalm 5:11-12.
You are my hiding place; You will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you. Psalm 32:8.
Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in Him, for He shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between His shoulders. Deuteronomy 33:12.
In our struggle against evil, we are dealing with spiritual powers. Therefore, we must put on the whole armor of God and stand against the attacks of the wicked one. “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds” (II Corinthians 10:4).
One powerful weapon that every Christian parent has is the ability to pray a daily hedge of protection around each of his or her children.
Job experienced this protection, and Satan complained about its effectiveness against him: “Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side?” (Job 1:10).
There are three parts to a prayer for a hedge of protection:
1-Ask God to bind and rebuke the power of Satan in the life of each one in your family. Be mighty through God to pull down strongholds. “No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man”(Mark 3:27).
2-Pray in the name and through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. “Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son” (John 14:13). Christ’s name is Protector, the Good Shepherd that gives His life for His sheep.
Claim the Scripture that relates to the kind of protection that is needed. For example, for protection from sin, you can claim a verse such as Romans 6:14, “For sin shall not have dominion over you”. For protection from discouragement, you could claim the promise “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5).
“Heavenly Father, I ask You in the name and through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ to bind and rebuke Satan and to put a hedge of protection around me and each one in my family. ‘Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in … [us] will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ’ (Philippians 1:6). In the name of Jesus Christ our Shepherd, Amen.”
